Managing the Chronic Pain Experience
Chronic musculoskeletal pain can be a complex and debilitating condition, often involving physical, emotional, and social challenges. Osteopathy can offer an approach to managing this type of pain by addressing all of these interconnected aspects through a biopsychosocial lens. Unlike some other treatments that focus solely on physical symptoms or the location of the pain, osteopathy recognises the importance of mental and emotional well-being, as well as social factors, in the management of long-term pain.
The OsteoMAP (Osteopathy, Mindfulness and Acceptance) programme is a post-graduate qualification which provides a unique approach for osteopaths. It focuses on improving self-management designed to empower patients to live with their chronic pain experience in a sustainable way. OsteoMAP has successfully combined psychological techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with osteopathy. ACT focuses on helping patients accept their pain, increase psychological flexibility, and align their actions with personal values, while mindfulness practices teach individuals how to be present and manage pain in a healthier way. When combined with osteopathic techniques this approach helps patients take an active role in managing their pain and improving their physical function
Delivered by trained osteopaths, OsteoMAP is tailored to each individual's condition, taking into account your specific pain patterns, emotional state, and lifestyle. By fostering a deeper understanding of the pain experience and offering practical coping strategies, this approach can foster the development of resilience and improve your long-term pain management.
